Project:  The Mount Holly Community Garden is a 501(c)3 located at 126 N. Main Street, Mount Holly, NC 28120.  Currently in our 5th growing season, our mission is to be a vibrant educational gardening community committed to sustainable organic horticulture & beauty while cultivating community bonds. The key component of the mural space consists of the side of a brick building which welcomes all who enter the garden and passing through Main Street.  The mural space is also adjacent to the First United Methodist Church and Preschool.


Project Dimensions: 68 inches x 168 inches on brick masonry.


Visual artists ages 18 and up with large scale painting on masonry experience and residing in the Charlotte Region including Alexander, Catawba, Cabarrus, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Stanly, Chester, Chesterfield, Lancaster and York counties are invited to submit a mural draft proposal. Transportation and board will not be provided to artist selected.


Theme: Submissions should capture a sense of community within the Garden and nature.  A vibrantly colored image which captures the spirit of our mission that can easily be interpreted and enjoyed by all ages. Mural will be visible for the life of the Garden in its current space.  The mural will also be beside our Garden blessing around the front right side of the building. A cohesive bond between the two is preferred. Garden blessing: “May the hungry be fed here, strangers become friends here, and community be grown here.  May the garden bless and be blessed.”


Exposure: The Mount Holly Community Garden is visited by 1000s of members of the community each year. The mural will also be visible from Main Street and lit at night. In addition, the mural will receive exposure on all social media accounts, websites and print media.  


Honorarium: An honorarium of $1,500 will be paid to the selected artist to be used for design, hours worked and materials.


Submission Process: Interested artists should select a single image for consideration.

All artists must submit the mural proposal via email to mthollycommunitygarden@gmail.com by Friday, June 28, 2019 at 11:59PM (EST).

LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

All Submissions must include the following to be considered:

  • Artist Background

  • Artist Statement: A brief statement about your proposed mural, as well as details about the mural’s tone and meaning.

  • Current and past work:  Provide images or links for reference

  • Education, employment, and exhibitions

  • One (1) Proposed Mount Holly Community Garden Mural Image

  • Artwork must be original and the creation of artist(s) submitting the work.

Selection Process: Submissions will be reviewed by the Mount Holly Community

Garden Mural Committee, Mount Holly Community Garden Board of Directors, First United Methodist Church Governing Board and the City of Mount Holly. The selected artist and mural will be contacted directly by July 12th, 2019.  The mural will be installed on an agreed upon date by September 14th, 2019.
